Gong Cha – Salty Boba?

24 Jan

Gong Cha is a Taiwanese chain of boba shops that gives an interesting twist – salt-laced milk froth on top of tea. For a drink that is often candy-sweet, will salt be sweet or an abomination?

A tip of the hat to Taipei543 for their great article on the top five bobas in Taipei. I hit up four of their top five on this trip!

Gong Cha has several branches around Taiwan, and has carved out a space in the cutthroat world of Taiwanese boba with the Nai Gai drink. You can choose a type of tea (jasmine, green, or black) and a level of sweetness specified as a number between 1 and 10. Then they top it with this salty cream mixture, lighter than a whipped cream but a little more substantial than cappuccino foam. You can stir it in the tea or drink them separately.

I got the green tea, sweetness level 5, and I was not stirring. The sweetness level was good, not too sweet. The tea was legit. The bobas were fine – I’d say slightly above Taipei average. The salty cream was really great combined with the cool green tea. It was not super salty, but added an interesting taste, while also highlighting the cream.

We went to the branch just outside the Taipei City Hall MRT station. It’s hard to find because it is in an alley. My best advice is take Exit 4, head east, and turn left at the first alley.

It’s worth seeking out.

Address: No.10, Alley 71, Section 5, ZhongXiao East Road, Taipei
