Ram’s Gate Winery, Sonoma

26 Feb

Ram’s Gate Winery is an interesting place. Not interesting in the sense that you have an interesting time visiting. It’s interesting because this place represents the exact antithesis of Joseph Swan Vineyards.

I don’t know the real story behind Ram’s Gate, but I am going to speculate anyways. RG is a nice comment on our current moment in tech and finance adulation. It is what I imagine to be the spoils of some huge tech IPO — taking all that ridiculous cash and trying to buy authenticity — but not real authenticity, more like the Disneyland version of a rustic vineyard.

You see this in the bland and devoid-of-detail back story on the website. You see this in the total lack of history of the ownership in Sonoma or Carneros. You see this in the hiring of a name brand winemaker to skip the hard part where you have to grow grapes and then wait years for a worthy product. Hire Jeff Gaffner, buy some juice from elsewhere, and buy instant credibility!
Anyways, there is not much to say about the experience. It is absolutely beautiful — like hanging out at a Pottery Barn photo shoot. It is a farmhouse aesthetic as viewed from a palace.

The wine is good — really expensive, which makes sense since you are essentially paying a premium over Saxon Brown’s prices for Gaffner’s wines.

It is situated as the first winery as you enter Sonoma Valley from the south, closer to the racetrack than the town of Sonoma. It’s the latest in the line of monstrous chateaux that are turning the edges of Sonoma into Napa.

But anyways, enjoy the lovely pictures.
