Victor Jr.’s – Red Sauce Italian for Sony Lunchers

LA has not had a red sauce Italian revival like NYC has had with Torrissi and Parm. So I don’t really know where you go for a decent spaghetti and meatballs that you can takeout and eat in front of the TV. Unfortunately, Culver City stalwart Victor Jr.’s doesn’t solve my dilemma.

Located near the Sony Studios, VJ does decent business. The interior is cramped and has some obligatory signed photos of celebrities. If I were going to eat there, I’d sit outside. But the few times I’ve been there, few people eat there.

The fried zucchini. I was excited to try it, remembering my favorite childhood side from Carl’s Jr. (are we ever going to get a Ranch dressing revival?). But these zucchini sticks basically sucked. Soggy, not particularly seasoned.

The spaghetti and meatballs were ok. The red sauce is not really anything to write home about. I’m not sure it’s not canned. The meatballs are homemade, but merely adequate.

The sausage sandwich was the real stinker. It was recommended by the counter guy. Unfortunately, it’s the saltiest meat product I’ve had in years — and that includes beef jerky. It’s basically inedible because of that.

VJ is also not particularly cheap, so it’s not a particularly good deal. So basically I don’t see any reason to go back.
