I don’t think of myself as a doughnut-douche, but I have been spouting off with strong opinions lately about doughnuts. A number of LA’s iconic dough slingers have left me disappointed, and a couple new fancy options (Donut Friend and Donut Snob) have not quite met expectations.

As of now, I’m ready to declare the best doughnuts in the LA area behind the Orange Curtain at Costa Mesa’s Sidecar Doughnuts.

Leaving Portland last month, I was sad that I had only been to Blue Star Doughnuts once and that there was nothing in LA could compare. The only comp I had was Federal Donuts in Philly. Both were clearly the work of accomplished chefs, and both were obsessive about freshness. Their unique flavors were not gimmicky, they were well-chosen combinations that matched sweetness with salt and tartness and fresh fruit flavors.

Well, put Sidecar in that company. Sidecar is helmed by chef Brooke Des Prez, who demands that every doughnut you buy is made within the hour. They have a strong coffee program with Stumptown pourovers and espresso.

You wait in a line wending by the dough being rolled out and then racks of freshly brought out doughnuts.

We had these three, which were great. The lemon pound cake was good, quite tart. The butter and salt was a revelation, a rich perfectly balanced confection. And my favorite was the huckleberry, delicious and fresh and not too sweet.

The exciting news for me is that they are going to open a second location in Santa Monica in November!
