Hey, it’s peach season! And what better way to celebrate the middle of stone fruit season than with a fresh peach pie. One of the best examples around is in Long Beach at local favorite, Jongewaard’s Bake n Broil (JBB).

This monster of a peach pie is just great — a beautiful flaky crust, and piles and piles of fresh cut peaches. The syrup holding it together is not sweetened much, so it doesn’t get in the way of tasting the great peaches.

The whole pie is $17, and a slice is about $4.50. Incredibly reasonable for in-house made, seasonal pies. As a point of comparison, the Pie Hole’s pies are $34 for the unseasonal apple pie.

It’s a simple place with a B&B aesthetic. Located just south of the slightly hipster-ish part of Bixby Knolls, JBB draws a local crowd.
Here’s where the magic happens.

The food is straight-forward American diner food — burgers, breakfast, a chicken pot pie. It’s good, but not necessarily memorable. It makes for a pleasant way to prepare yourself for the pie.
