Still no official word from Sidecar about when their Santa Monica location is going to open. They said November, so I’m holding my tantrum in until then.
We took the occasion of a party to get a few dozen doughnuts from Sidecar. Still incredible.

I don’t think of myself as a doughnut-douche, but I have been spouting off with strong opinions lately about doughnuts. A number of LA’s iconic dough slingers have left me disappointed, and a couple new fancy options (Donut Friend and Donut Snob) have not quite met expectations.
As of now, I’m ready to declare the best doughnuts in the LA area behind the Orange Curtain at Costa Mesa’s Sidecar Doughnuts.
We were told by more than one local that they were glad we weren’t one of those tourists who brought a pink box of Voodoo Doughnuts on the plane home. I had tried Voodoo a couple times before, once from a tourist friend bringing it home with her and another in Portland when another tourist friend bought a box to share. It’s fine if you want a regular doughnut with some Fruity Pebbles on it. And in the shape of a Voodoo doll. But if you are an adult and you actually want a doughnut that tastes good (and you’re in Portland), you should go to Blue Star Donuts.

The Sandwich Smith also does a tribute to the Donut Man’s famous fresh fruit stuffed doughnuts. In the interests of science, I got the strawberry.
I had read some Grey Lady hype about this doughnut and chicken place in Philadelphia, so I had to check it out when I happened to be in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, no chance for chicken this time. But I’m ready to declare the doughnuts are good. Real good.
