Roy Choi on Munchery

15 Sep

Roy Choi is becoming the new queen of omnimedia. He’s now up to at least 5 restaurants, 4 food trucks, a consulting gig (3 Worlds Cafe), a sponsorship deal with Spam (the dream!), and a soon-to-be bonafide fast-food chain (although sorry to say I’m not expecting it to blow up beyond the couple they have planned).

Now, he’s testing the waters on home delivery with Munchery. (Yes, you can get Chego delivered if you live in the service area, but it’s pretty small for now.)

So, how did I feel about putting American cheese in my ramen?

Momofuku Noodle Bar – NYC – Worth the Wait

5 Aug

Momofuku Noodle Bar is the place that launched a thousand pork belly buns, arguably kicked off the American ramen revolution, and made David Chang a Fooddouche-household name. It just celebrated its 10th anniversary — quite an accomplishment in the brutal NYC restaurant scene. Although the basic menu has not changed that much since 2004 (except for the famous fried chicken dinners), it’s still a mandatory NYC stop.

Daikokuya – the Godfather of LA Ramen

20 Feb

20130215-072104.jpg
This post is long overdue, and woefully incomplete. I lost my photos of most of my meal and haven’t replaced them yet. But the occasion of Daikokuya’s 11th anniversary necessitates a post of the place that inspired my, and most of LA’s, ramen awakening.

Santouka – After Five Times I’ve Decided Santouka Is OK

6 Feb

Now having an official Top Ten Ramen list, courtesy of JGold, I had the chance to revisit my first check on this list, Santouka. Strangely, this happened in Irvine, CA, in a hidden corner of the old Heritage Plaza near where Bullwinkle’s used to be (now it’s a Buffalo Wild Wings).

Ikemen – Ramen and Tsukemen Vying for Little Tokyo Dominance

30 Jan

20130130-071208.jpg
Just when you thought little Little Tokyo could not have any more ramen openings, Hollywood’s Ikemen opens a branch in the very recently shuttered Curry House To Go space. Does this new entrant have anything to say?

Tsujita – Holy Moley! Second Location! Night Noodles?

18 Jan

Huge news! via Grubstreet

Grubstreet claims to have confirmed that the now-shuttered Miyata Menji (nee GReats) space across the street from Tsujita will become the new second location of Tsujita. There is speculation that this new location will relent to the cries of millions of desperate tsukemen-seekers and start serving noodles at night. They’ll have to retrain their wait staff to now greet every person to come in at night with a different greeting: “You know we don’t serve noodles for dinner here? But you can go across the street.”

Sanji Ramen – Taiwan – Really Good Ramen, Hold the Garlic

It seems that a claim to having Taiwan’s #1 ramen might be doubted for a couple reasons. But Sanji Ramen turned out to be pretty great, even to a Tsujita-jaded fooddouche.

Ma Peche – NYC Midtown Momofuku Lunch

11 Dec

On the occasion of J recreating a dish we had in NYC the last time we were there, I decided to post about the lunch we had at Ma Peche, David Chang’s midtown Momofuku spinoff.
